Built on a limestone cliff over 1,500 meters long and approximately 100 meters wide, the town is a truly unique place to visit. Of medieval origin, the old town was a fortified city during Genoese rule, whose citadel was intended to protect it against Saracen invasion. Its incredible ramparts and fortress-like houses bear witness to the town's former military function.
The Straits of Bonifacio were designated a nature reserve in 1999.
